An 1883 boutique hotel on Nantucket’s Main Street is making headlines for its new image and new name.

76 Main Ink Press Hotel is a renovated 20-room Victorian mansion, formerly 76 Main, that honors the island’s media heritage. The hotel displays newspaper stories that have shaped the island’s history, as well as custom artwork, vintage typewriters, and even rooms that honor two local authors.

“The history of the island has been richly documented over time by scores of journalists and photographers, and 76 Main Ink Press Hotel preserves and honors their legacy,” said owner Bruce Percelay, publisher of N Magazine and the Nantucket Current, and named among Boston magazine’s 150 most influential Bostonians.

The former captain’s home, billed as the only island hotel that generates its electricity through a solar installation, boasts contemporary furnishings and an “upscale beachy island vibe,” according to a press release.

The hotel is a block from Nantucket’s town center, a picturesque area full of cobblestone streets, quaint shops, and restaurants, and it’s a short walk from the harbor and beach.

Guests who arrive at the check-in desk are immersed in island news via vintage newspaper wall coverings.

In the lobby, island newspaper logos fill a wall behind a set of couches.

The lobby also features a commissioned sculpture by American contemporary artist Paul Rousso.

Travelers can choose from courtyard suites and king and queen rooms with plush linens and private bathrooms. The rooms have custom padded headboards, air conditioning, and smart TVs. Some rooms have seating areas.

Island stories are brought to life in the hotel’s common area through tin plates of old newspapers reporting on big stories such as the Great Fire of 1846 and the sinking of the Andrea Doria in 1956. Newspapers and magazines are available for reading.

Hotel shelves display the tools of the journalism trade: antique typewriters, press cameras, microphones, and more.

Two rooms are also dedicated to local authors Elin Hilderbrand, whose romance novels are famously set on the island, and Nathaniel Philbrick, who has written about Nantucket’s whaling history.

Guests enjoy amenities such as housemade cookies and snacks, handcrafted sodas from local artisans, beach bags, chairs, towels, and a personalized concierge service offering tailor-made experiences such as sunset sails and culinary tours.

For those seeking a relaxing outdoor spot, the hotel’s shaded courtyard offers seating beneath an almost century-old cherry blossom tree. At night, fire pits and twinkling lights illuminate the space, and travelers have access to a self-serve BYOB bar with housemade syrups and mixers.

Starting rates begin at $379 for the off season and $849 during peak season.
