On June 25, 1888, work began on building the first Naples pier, which had many uses including freight, arriving and departing visitors.

The pier was 600 feet long. It increased to 1,000 feet in its second life, after being destroyed by a hurricane in 1910 hurricane.

It was rebuilt again in 1926, 1944 and 1960. In 2015 the pier was reconstructed, and then soon after in 2017 Hurricane Irma damaged the structure.

In September 2022, Hurricane Ian caused catastrophic damage to the Naples Pier. According to the city of Naples, “Approximately 460 feet of the pier was damaged significantly, with about 140 feet of the end sitting at the bottom of the Gulf. The shelter at the end of the pier and over 30-plus pilings make up the 140 feet of missing pier.”

The city has decided to replace the pier with a new structure.
