What’s that? A new development is taking shape near Jackson
JACKSON COUNTY, MI – A new development in taking shape in Summit Township that will bring another bank branch to the area. Southern Michigan Bank & Trust is developing a new Jackson-area branch on the corner of Horton Road and Weatherwax Drive. Construction began in June, and bank officials anticipate the new branch to be complete by the end of the year, President/CEO John Waldron said.

JACKSON, MI – The 2024 Hot Air Jubilee has officially launched in Jackson, and organizers are keeping their fingers crossed for a great weekend. The annual Jackson event is celebrating 41 years in 2024, from Friday, July 19, through Sunday, July 21, at Ella Sharp Park, 2800 Fourth St. Admission and parking are free.
Jackson County sheriff faces challenger in Aug. 6 primary
JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Voters will decide in August if it is time for a new Jackson County sheriff. Scott E. Aughney faces off against incumbent Sheriff Gary R. Schuette during the Aug. 6 primary election. Both are vying for a 4-year term as Jackson County’s top cop.
Lanes, ramp closing on I-94 west of Jackson County
CALHOUN COUNTY, MI – Several closures are coming to I-94 just outside Jackson County. The Michigan Department of Transportation is closing single lanes on I-94 between I-69 and Partello Road near Marshall. Expect the closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily Friday, July 19, through Saturday, July 20, officials said.

‘We’re not a party town’: Chelsea residents resist extended noise ordinance
CHELSEA, MI – Some Chelsea residents are pushing back against a city proposal that would allow local businesses to stay open later at night. Multiple people spoke out at the Monday, July 15 Chelsea City Council meeting against the recommendation from City Manager Marty Colburn and the Chelsea Downtown Development Authority to extend the city’s noise ordinance in the downtown area by two hours, from 10 p.m. to midnight.
Manchester District Library at risk of closure if millage does not pass
MANCHESTER, MI – A long-standing library is at potential risk of closure if Manchester voters do not pass a proposal on Aug. 6. The Manchester District Library is asking for a tax reduction, in order to contribute to reducing property taxes in the Manchester area. The 0.9999-mill tax for ten years, beginning in 2025, is on the primary election ballot. This tax proposal is a decrease from the previous millage of 1.045 mills.
