Former Tennessee State basketball player Jeremiah Crutcher, who led Whites Creek to the semifinals of the TSSAA Class 2A state tournament in March, was named the new men's basketball coach at Fisk on Friday.

Crutcher replaced legendary Georgia Tech and NBA player Kenny Anderson, who resigned in April after six seasons . Anderson was 33-79 at Fisk.

Crutcher led Whites Creek to a 26-6 record before losing to undefeated Douglass in the state tournament. He spent four seasons at Whites Creek. The Cobras made vast improvement under Crutcher after going 11-21 in his first season.

Prior to that, Crutcher had stints as an assistant at Lebanon, Pearl-Cohn, BGA and his alma mater, Hunters Lane. His first head coaching position was at John Early Middle School (2018-20).

Crutcher was an All-State and Tennessean All-Midstate player who became Hunters Lane's all-time leading scorer in 2006. He led the Warriors to the state tournament as a senior.

He began his college playing career at Okaloosa-Walton College (now Northwest Florida State College) before transferring to TSU.

Crutcher, a point guard, was a two-year starter at TSU. He led the Tigers in assists (111) as a senior and averaged 8.3 points per game and shot 80.1% from the free-throw line.

Fisk went 14-16 overall and 10-8 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference this past season.

Mardy Scales named Fisk track coach

Fisk also hired former Middle Tennessee State track star Marcelle "Mardy" Scales as its track coach Friday.

Scales previously served as an assistant at Kennesaw State and before that at Cumberland.

Scales was a seven-time All-American at MTSU from 2001 to 2004, winning the NCAA 100-meter outdoor collegiate title as a junior. He was a seven-time Sun Belt individual champion and was named Sun Belt male athlete of the year in 2004.

He was inducted into the MTSU Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
