Titans give positive update on T'Vondre Sweat prior to start of 2024 training camp

NASHVILLE - It's not difficult to see why the Tennessee Titans fell in love with defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat and drafted him with the 38th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

As someone who got to see Sweat up close during the NFL Combine and Senior Bowl prior to the draft, he truly is a must watch talent. At over 360 pounds, Sweat is one of the biggest and strongest defensive players in the league at 23 years old.

Sweat is impossible to defend one-on-one. He covers multiple run gaps just by existing and he is shockingly athletic for his size. There's a reason he won the Outland Trophy in his final season at Texas and was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year .

But even with those accolades to his name and his jarring physical gifts, Sweat was a controversial draft choice by the Titans in the second round. Some are concerned about his character after a pre-draft DWI arrest . Some are worried about his weight and how it will impact his ability to stay on the field.

While I firmly disagree with the folks who criticized this draft pick for one of those reasons, it's undeniable that Sweat is a controversial rookie who will have a lot of eyeballs on him this season. It didn't help that Sweat was absent for OTAs this summer due to precautionary injury rehab.

Titans head coach Brian Callahan remained steadfast in his belief that Sweat would be back and ready by training camp. "Confident" is the worst Callahan used most frequently, but Titans fans have heard this song and dance before. Of course the head coach is going to protect his players. That doesn't mean things won't change by the time training camp rolls around.

Well...the time is here. Titans training camp opens in less than one week and the latest update on T'Vondre Sweat is all good news. According to Paul Kuharsky, Sweat is
"expected" to be on the field for the start of training camp.

To me, this is an upgrade of Sweat's status if anything. It's one thing for the head coach to say he's confident his player will be on the field months ahead of time. It's a much more encouraging update to hear that he is expected to be available just one week away from training camp.

Titans fans should be fired up. They should be chomping at the bit to get a look at Sweat during training camp. If the rookie is as dominant as I believe he can be, the pairing of Sweat and Jeffery Simmons is going to make for. possibly the scariest defensive front in the league.
