3 Biggest Questions the Titans Offense Must Answer in Training Camp

NASHVILLE -- Brian Callahan is about to begin his first training camp as head coach of the Tennessee Titans. A fresh start for the franchise that parted ways with Mike Vrabel, quarterback Ryan Tannehill and running back Derrick Henry is underway.

Much hope hinges on the development of second-year passer Will Levis.

    Offensive Line In Pads

General manager Ran Carthon invested heavily in the offensive line this Spring.

Hiring Callahan, in part, for his quarterback acumen was essential. Landing his father, Bill, a renowned offensive line coach to fix a position group that has plagued Tennessee for the last two seasons was as important.

Center Lloyd Cushenberry, Saahdiq Charles and Geron Christian signed with the Titans in free agency. Cushenberry immediately upgrades the interior of the pocket from the departed Aaron Brewer (Miami Dolphins). Drafting JC Latham with the seventh overall pick in April to play left tackle alongside 2023 first-round choice Peter Skoronski at left guard solidifies those three positions as training camp begins.

Carthon also traded with the Cleveland Browns for tackle Leroy Watson.

Which of the 9 other linemen capitalize on the season's first padded practices to claim open jobs at right guard and right tackle remains to be seen. 2022 third-round pick Nicholas Petit-Frere feels like the biggest wildcard. Petit-Frere missed the entirety of the offseason program rehabbing from injury after appearing in three games with two starts last year.

A (reduced) gambling policy suspension cost him the first four games of the season, while a shoulder injury in a Week 9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers landed him on Injured Reserve for the remainder of the year.

    Will Levis in Year 2

Carthon went all-in around the former Kentucky quarterback in free agency and the draft.

Levis has been given ample resources to continue his development as a pro. It has been a busy offseason for him between learning Callahan's offense, taking a team-building trip to Mexico with his new collection of skill players, and playing in LIV Golf Pro-Ams with Phil Mickelson. Levis has the talent and the personality to really elevate Tennessee on and off the field.

Entering camp as the undisputed starter after sitting behind Tannehill as a rookie means Levis must continue to prove that he can make the team his.

    Brian Callahan's Operation

Calling plays is one thing, but being a first-year NFL head coach at the same time is entirely another.

Callahan is a football lifer, it is in his family's DNA. Carthon and Callahan took great care in targeting the best possible staff this offseason with the right mix of talent and wisdom. How Callahan distinguishes himself in his new role will be fascinating to watch. Levis' successes and failures will also be directly linked to his new play-calling head coach.

"We're learning kind of every day," Callahan said this offseason. "I come out here, I learn about guys and they're learning as well. So it's sort of an ongoing process that'll go all the way through training camp and generally happens into the season as well."

A resumé of working with Peyton Manning, Matt Stafford, Derek Carr and Joe Burrow brings the expectation efficient offense and above average quarterback play.
