Tennessee Titans training camp: Biggest standouts from first practice

    By Mike Moraitis,

The Tennessee Titans held their first practice of training camp and Wednesday and allowed beat writers in to give us the scoop on what went on during the session.

It wasn't a great day for the offense, which looked sloppy overall, according to the observations of those on the ground. More specifically, it wasn't a great day for the offensive line, which is working in multiple new starters.

We also saw the return of punter Ryan Stonehouse and defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat. We'll go into more detail about Stonehouse below, but Sweat's return was good to see after he missed most of the offseason program practices due to an undisclosed injury.

Now, a look at Stonehouse's day and more as we go over the biggest standouts from the Titans' first practice of training camp.

Titans training camp standouts Day 1

    P Ryan Stonehouse

It's incredible to think that just seven months ago Stonehouse suffered a torn ACL, MCL and a broken bone in his leg, yet there he was bombing punts on Day 1 of camp.

"It was great to see punter Ryan Stonehouse back on the field. Stonehouse, injured at the end of last season, was hitting bombs on his first day back, Jim Wyatt of TennesseeTitans.com wrote .

    OLB Jaylen Harrell

Harrell was the talk of the proverbial town on Wednesday, with beat writers noting he was one of the biggest standouts and was able to notch some reps against Tennessee's first-team offense.

"Rookie edge rusher Jaylen Harrell was the first player out the door and on the practice field on Day 1 of camp, and he made some plays as well," Wyatt said of Harrell. "I thought it was a pretty impressive start for the team's seventh-round pick."

The Titans figures to be locked-in at the top-three spots on the depth chart at outside linebacker with Harold Landry, Arden Key and Rashad Weaver, which might leave just one spot up for grabs at the position.

Harrell, who will battle it out with Caleb Murphy and Thomas Rush, is off to a great start. We didn't see any mentions of Murphy or Rush after Day 1.

    TE David Martin-Robinson

According to Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky, Martin-Robinson, who is one of the Titans' undrafted free agents , was a "surprise" on Wednesday. Unfortunately, we didn't get any specifics as to why, but that's enough to get him on this list.

The Titans have their top-two spots on the tight end depth chart locked-in with Chig Okonkwo and Josh Whyle. Nick Vannett is the favorite to grab the No. 3 role, but clearly we need to keep an eye on Martin-Robinson. It remains to be seen if the Titans will keep four.

    LB Kenneth Murray

Murray was the Titans' big free-agent addition at linebacker in the wake of Azeez Al-Shaair leaving. He caught the eye of Wyatt on Wednesday.

"I kept noticing linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. on Wednesday, perhaps because it was his first full day on the field since being signed earlier in the offseason," Wyatt wrote of Murray. "Murray was in the backfield on a number of plays, which would have resulted in tackles for a loss. Murray spent most the offseason working on a side field, not participating in drills."
