Chance Mallory looks at the Tennessee Basketball program and sees the success Rick Barnes and his staff have had with undersized guards. That’s what the Vols are selling the 5-foot-9 four-star 2025 point guard and that’s why they’re one of his final six schools.
Mallory, the No. 34 overall player in the On3 Ratings, has the Vols listed alongside Virginia, Virginia Tech, Villanova, Clemson and Miami according to On3’s Jamie Shaw .
“Their formula with smaller guards stands out for me,” Mallory told Shaw while breaking down each of his final six schools . “They have had a bunch of small guards come through their program.
“In talking with Coach (Justin) Gainey , he thinks I can be one of those key small guards and have great success at their school. I talk with Coach Gainey a lot and with Coach (Rick) Barnes . I have built a good relationship with those two and the program.”

Mallory, out of Charlottesville, Virginia, is the No. 5 point guard in the class in the On3 Ratings and the No. 2 overall player in Virginia. The On3 Industry Ranking has Mallory at No. 55 nationally and No. 9 at point guard.
He has official visits scheduled with each of his six finalists. His Tennessee visit is set for October 12, he told Shaw, after trips to Virginia Tech (Sept. 6-8), Virginia (Sept. 13-15), Clemson (Sept. 20-22) and Villanova (Sept. 27-29). He’ll visit Miami October 25-27.
“I talk about it a lot, but family is going to be the biggest thing for me,” Mallory told Shaw. “I like a family aspect in the locker room, you know, no bad blood. The relationships I’ve been able to build with the coaches will be big for me.
“How much they trust me and how much they’ve talked to me about where they see me fit into their program so I can be able to play as early as possible.”

On3 National Recruiting Analyst Jamie Shaw : “What you walk away with after watching Chance Mallory play is the amount of confidence he plays with. While he is a smaller guard, he carries a stocky frame and brings a sense of electricity to the table. Mallory plays with excellent balance, and he has a crafty handle. He touches the paint often, showing a nice middle game whether it is with pull-up jumpers or floaters. With his size, he can struggle at times to finish at the rim, but he plays with a physicality that helps. Mallory gives good effort defending at the point of attack and he has quick hands with natural anticipation. He plays off two feet in the paint and has a solid vision in traffic. He also carries deep range with a quick release from three. His shooting range extends defenses which opens up spacing inside the arc. He has led his teams to a lot of wins providing some pretty electric performances along the way.”
