Toby Keith tribute concert receives praise, reveals best moments online

COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — A tribute concert for country music icon Toby Keith that will air on WTWO in August was recorded Monday night at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

“Toby Keith: American Icon” included performances by some of the most popular artists in country music. Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Ashley McBryde, Parker McCollum, Jelly Roll, Darius Rucker, Carrie Underwood, Lainey Wilson and more turned out to sing Keith’s greatest hits and honor the late entertainer.

Several clips of the show posted on social media received overwhelming positive reactions from fans.

Videos on TikTok showed Eric Church singing Keith’s “As Good As I Once Was,” Trace Adkins’s heartfelt rendition of “American Soldier” backed by Mac McAnally, Riley Green and Ella Langley’s duet of “Who’s Your Daddy” and Jamey Johnson and Lainey Wilson’s performance of “Beer For My Horses.”

Photos and video of Wilson riding into the arena on horseback before joining Johnson on stage were also shared on several social media accounts.

“Lainey Wilson … Comes through Bridgestone Arena on a horse!” one Facebook user captioned their clip.

Jelly Roll crooned “My List,” in a recording posted on Facebook, which also contained his comments before he checked his nerves with an outstretched shaking hand and launched into his performance.

He dedicated the song to Keith’s family noting, “Toby inspired me to be a better American, a better human, a better songwriter and with songs like this, most importantly, he inspired me to be a better father.”

Another of Jelly Roll’s moments was documented on TikTok. He introduced a video of Keith laying down vocals in a recording session for “Ships That Don’t Come In,” by Joe Diffie. The nearly eight-and-a-half-minute video continued as Keith’s daughter Shelley Covel introduced her sister Krystal Keith who sang a beautiful version of her father’s song “Don’t Let the Old Man In.”

“Amazing,” the caption read. “Toby Keith’s last recording that was never released. And Toby’s daughter sings don’t let the old man in.”
