Tennessee Titans' biggest takeaways from 2nd padded practice of camp

    By Mike Moraitis,

After what was an eventful Tuesday practice that featured a brawl, things were a bit more toned down for the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday, which was also the team's second padded practice of training camp.

The big story early on, of course, was defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons, who was responsible for starting multiple fights on Tuesday before going off on AtoZ Sports' Buck Reising after practice.

When speaking to the media, Simmons took accountability for his actions and apologized for them. Simmons also patched things up with Reising, with both noting they had a good conversation to clear things up.

Now, let's get to some football: here's the biggest takeaways from the Titans' second padded practice of training camp on Wednesday.

    Titans training camp takeaways

    Another heated exchange

Tight end Josh Whyle and linebacker Kenneth Murray had a little back-and-forth after one rep during the 7-on-7 period after Whyle beat Murray off the ball. The second-year tight end showed some confidence and Murray didn't like it.

Both players are having a strong training camp, and it's particularly good to see Whyle displaying some confidence as he tries to carve out a role in Year 2.

    Malik Willis continues to impress

Willis continues to turn heads at training camp and looks to be much-improved from where he was last season.

    Titans rookies stand out

Multiple Titans rookies caught the eye of Broadway Sports Media's JT Ruhnke. The list included left tackle JC Latham, defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat, cornerback Jarvis Brownlee and wide receiver Jha'Quan Jackson.

Will Levis starts out strong, cools off late

Jim Wyatt: "Levis was sharp early, and he had a mostly solid day. Levis completed his first 10 passes in the session, including four straight in the opening team period, and then the first six of 7-on-7. Levis cooled off a bit late, but he made a great throw across the middle of the field to tight end Chig Okonkwo in the red zone lockout period. I had Levis 9-of-15 in team drills, and 6-of-7 in 7-on-7, making him 15-of-22 for the day. I now have Levis 63-of-88 with two interceptions in 7-on-7 and team periods combined in camp."

    Treylon Burks shines

Wyatt: "Burks had a good day on Wednesday, starting with the 1-on-1s, when he got open twice for catches. He carried that over into other periods, including an early team period, when he hauled in a deep ball thrown by quarterback Will Levis. Burks looks confident, and in good shape."

    Kick returner duos

According to Wyatt, the Titans had a handful of duos back to return kicks, including Treylon Burks and Tyjae Spears, Kyle Philips and Mason Kinsey, Jha'Quan Jackson and Jabari Small, Kearis Jackson and Sam Schnee, and Tre'Shaun Harrison and Eric Garror.

    Mason Rudolph review

While a lot of the attention has rightly been on Willis, his competition for the No. 2 job, Rudolph, has been solid in his own right during camp.

Wyatt: "Quarterback Mason Rudolph continues to be accurate, and efficient. Rudolph connected on 6 of his 7 passes in team periods, and he was 2 of 3 in 7-on-7, making him 8-of-10 on the day. I now have Rudolph 41-of-48 with one INT in the 7-on-7 and team drills in camp."

    Next practice

Per Wyatt, the Titans' next open practice will be on Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. CT.
