Country music fans, start your engines. Heartland, known for 2006 platinum chart-topper “I Loved Her First,” teamed with the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway for their new tire-squealing anthem, “Borrowed Time.”
Written by Jacob Powel, Pavel Dovgalyuk, and Ben Daniel, “Borrowed Time” opens with crunchy rock guitar and heavy drums. The lyrics include: “If I’m here tomorrow, just call it borrowed time.”
The song and video will be available on Friday. American Songwriter is debuting the music video filmed at and in conjunction with Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.
“Basically, it’s a song just talking about going out and a guy raising hell and probably getting into things he probably shouldn’t,” says singer Lance Horton. “But he’s still alive. He’s still kicking. He’s living on borrowed time is essentially the gist of the song.”
Horton describes the up-tempo rocker as a fun song Heartland enjoys playing live.
“I don’t really know that there’s a special meaning for us with it other than it was just good and upbeat,” Horton said, explaining that songwriter Ben Daniel is his cousin. Daniel sent “Borrowed Time” to him, and he shared it with his bandmates, who immediately agreed. It’s just a good, upbeat, up-tempo song that we enjoy.”
The video features Horton with Heartland’s original members Craig Anderson, Todd Anderson, and Mike Myerson performing in the middle of the racetrack at the start/finish line. Scenes from the mechanic crews working on the race cars in garages are interspersed with footage of the band singing and cars racing around the track.

Heartland: “It’s Very Dangerous”
“I think they plan on using that song at the speedway as like a theme song because it sort of fits,” Horton said. “It’s borrowed time. You’ve got a bunch of race car drivers running around that track at 180 miles an hour. It’s very dangerous, obviously, and it just fit.”
Heartland’s distribution company helped the band foster its relationship with Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. The group will perform the national anthem at the track on August 10, which is family night. Members will also sign autographs before the race and during intermission.
Horton said the feeling in the video mimics the adrenaline on race day as it follows the story of driver, Dalton Hamlett, and his dad, who also raced at the track, prepping for a race. The footage shows Hamlett winning an actual race, and the clip captured the jubilation of his first victory at the speedway.
“It all came full circle and just basically gives you insight to a racer and how they prepare for that and what they do,” Horton said.
