The pop girls are showing they are big country music fans.

At the end of July, pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo shocked fans when she brought out Kentucky native Tyler Childers at Rupp Arena. The crossover of an extreme pop princess with the Appalachian roots of Childers worked shockingly well together, and the roar of the audience showed how many of her fans know and love Tyler Childers.

Last night, another pop sensation in Nashville followed in Rodrigo’s footsteps, pulling a page out of her playbook. Tate McRae took to the stage of Ascend Amphitheater and brought out the “it girl” of country music these days, Megan Moroney. The self-proclaimed Emo Cowgirl is a pop fan, too, supporting Olivia Rodrigo and other artists at their shows.

McRae paused in the middle of her set and introduced Moroney to the stage, noting that she is a massive fan of country music.

“I myself am a huge fan of country music. I’m so f***ing excited to sing with the one and only… Megan Moroney. Give it up for Megan!”

The audience goes nuts as Moroney walks out on stage with her silver blinged-out guitar and her signature short dress and boots. McRae then asks the audience if they are familiar with a little song called “Tennessee Orange,” once again, the audience goes wild.

Moroney strikes up the melody on her guitar and lets McRae take the first verse. Tate McRae has a stellar vocal range, and it fits the song really well. I’m not going to lie; I was a little taken aback. I like Tate McRae’s music alone, but she leans heavily into the pop genre, and her smooth vocals are considerably different from Moroney’s raspy twang.

When the two join together for the chorus, Moroney takes the lead vocal, and McRae takes a backseat, keeping a low, harmonious vocal line that compliments Moroney.

This duo was most definitely not on my bingo card for the year…but hey, neither was Olivia Rodrigo with Tyler Childers.
