Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball is making significant strides in his long-awaited return to the NBA. After a prolonged absence that has kept him off the court since January 2021, Ball is now actively participating in 5-on-5 scrimmages in Los Angeles. This development marks a crucial step in his journey back to professional basketball, and it raises hopes for his return in the 2024-25 season.

Ball’s injury issues began during his time with the Los Angeles Lakers. In July 2018, he underwent knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. While the procedure initially seemed successful, the problems persisted. By January 2022, while playing for the Chicago Bulls, Ball was diagnosed with a meniscus tear and a bone bruise. He underwent another surgery that month, but the recovery did not go as planned.

The situation deteriorated further when Ball required a cartilage transplant surgery in March 2023. This latest procedure was intended to address the ongoing issues in his knee but added more time to his already lengthy recovery. Throughout this period, Ball has faced not only physical challenges but also the emotional strain of being away from the game he loves.

    Early Career Promise

Despite these setbacks, Ball’s potential was evident from the beginning of his career. Drafted by the Lakers as the No. 2 overall pick in 2017, Ball made an immediate impact. In his rookie season, he averaged 10.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. His all-around contributions demonstrated his ability to influence games in multiple ways, and he was quickly recognized as a promising young talent.

After one season with the Lakers, Ball was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in a deal that brought Anthony Davis to Los Angeles. During his first season with the Pelicans, Ball felt he was on the verge of becoming one of the league’s top point guards. “Every time I catch my stride, something goes wrong,” Ball reflected on the What An Experience Show. “That month before COVID, if you ask me, I think I’m the best point guard in the league.”

    A Peak at His Potential

The period leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic was particularly promising for Ball. In the final six games before the season was interrupted, he delivered some of the best performances of his career. Ball averaged 20.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 7.8 assists, and 2.2 steals per game during this stretch. His overall season averages of 11.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.0 assists were a solid foundation, which he built upon the following season by averaging a career-high 14.6 points per game.

In the summer of 2021, Ball was acquired by the Bulls, bringing renewed hope to the franchise. During the early part of the 2021-22 season, Ball’s contributions were significant. His presence on the court was a catalyst for the Bulls’ performance, as they held a 22-13 record with him and a 24-23 record without him. However, his knee issues reemerged, cutting his season short and leading to further complications that have kept him sidelined for the past two years.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Lonzo Ball, Chicago Bulls Updates

The Bulls, now facing an uphill battle after losing their leading scorer, DeMar DeRozan, to free agency, are eagerly anticipating Ball’s return. If he can regain his previous form, it would provide a substantial boost to a team striving to reestablish itself in the playoffs. The potential of having a fully healthy Ball back in the lineup is a factor for the Bulls’ prospects in the upcoming season, along with the addition of Josh Giddey.

Despite these setbacks, Ball remains hopeful about his return. In a recent interview with TMZ Sports, he expressed his determination to get back on the court, saying, “[Fans can expect] me back on the court. That’s all I want to do.” This statement reflects his ongoing commitment to returning to full health and rejoining the NBA.

    Hope for the Future

As Ball continues his recovery, the recent development of participating in scrimmages brings a renewed sense of optimism. The progress he has shown indicates that he is moving closer to a return to full NBA action. For the Bulls and their fans, Ball’s comeback could be a game-changer, potentially transforming their playoff aspirations.

Ball’s road to recovery has been long and challenging, but his recent progress brings renewed hope. With each step forward, the possibility of Ball rejoining the NBA and making a significant impact on the court becomes more tangible. His return could be crucial for the Bulls as they aim to reestablish themselves in the playoffs.
