Woman finds freak object inside her abdomen and was hit with horror when she started pulling on it

A woman went to the doctor after experiencing stomach pains, not expecting to find a foreign object in her abdomen .

Mariel Vidal, 58, underwent a procedure on July 22, where doctors removed a 20-centimeter cloth that was left inside her body from a previous surgery. The incident took place at Beneficencia Portuguesa de Santos Hospital in the São Paulo city of Santos.

Vidal suffered from colon cancer in 2022, having undergone a colostomy at the time. A colostomy is a procedure that creates an opening in the abdomen and diverts one end of the intestine out of the opening and into an external pouch. The pouch then collects a person's stool.

In November 2023, she began having stomach pains and weight loss, similar symptoms to colon cancer, but X-rays didn’t reveal any issues.

On July 20, she checked her pouch and noticed an unknown material, leading her to seek medical attention. She was admitted for testing, with doctors thinking it was dry stool.

They then discovered it as a piece of cloth.

Stefany Vidal, daughter of Mariel, told Brazilian news outlet G1: “She saw it, thought it was strange and started pulling it, then she realized it was a cloth. So, she called her supervisor, the surgeon.

“He evaluated it and put his hand in it, then he started pulling it and it was a very large cloth, by the way.”

She said Mariel remains hospitalized for now while doctors determine if she needs another surgery. Her family is happy the cancer has not returned, but still upset with the original surgeons.

She said: “The first feeling was anger, because only those who have had a relative with cancer know how difficult it is.”

“We thought the cancer was coming back. Her head wasn't well anymore,' she added. 'But finding out that it was a cloth inside her made me angry, because she should have been fine.”

She said her mother will be seeking legal action against the hospital.

In a statement, Cubatão Municipal Hospital said it has been in contact with Mariel Vidal to ensure her recovery and has been providing support to her and her family. It also added that the surgeon who operated the woman in July 2022 is no longer a member of its surgical team.
