New Office of the Public Defender opens in Kent Co., applications now open
KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A new Office of the Public Defender is aiming to expand the criminal defense system for indigent adults in Kent County. This decision comes after a report by the National Association for Public Defense recommended establishing a new office. Previously, defense for indigent adults was overseen by the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission, before eventually being transferred to individual counties. In Kent County, private attorneys have been utilized for the past six years.
