Glenwood basks in post-RAGBRAI glow
(Glenwood) -- Chalk up another RAGBRAI hosting stint for Glenwood. For the eighth time, Glenwood was a starting point for the Des Moines Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. Jennie Davis is executive director of the Mills County Area Chamber of Commerce. Davis tells KMA News inclement weather didn't stop bicyclists from pouring into the community for Saturday's expo.
Transgender woman filing suit after state refused Medicaid coverage for reassignment surgery
AMES, Iowa — Sondra Wilson claims that the state denied her Medicaid coverage for her gender reassignment surgery. Wilson doesn’t have a law degree, but is representing herself in this case. She said she reached out to about 50 different law firms across the state and couldn’t afford any of the quotes she was given.
RAGBRAI rides through Glenwood, Red Oak
(Red Oak) -- Cyclists from across the country and the globe began the over 460-mile trek of RAGBRAI Sunday. After kicking off with an expo in Glenwood Saturday, tens of thousands of cyclists made their way across Mills County and began filing into Red Oak Sunday afternoon and evening for the 51st Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. Tents, trailers, and trucks packed into the Red Oak Junior-Senior High and Inman Elementary grounds, public parks, and host family's yards and homes. KMA News had a chance to catch up with some riders, including first-timers such as Al West from northwest Missouri. A veteran cyclist, West says he has usually preferred riding solo or with smaller groups. But, he says the first day went well in the jam-packed event.

Creston police report pair of early Monday morning drug arrests
(Creston) -- A pair of Creston suspects face drug charges following their arrests in separate incidents early Monday morning. The Creston Police Department says 44-year-old Ronnee Colleen Abel of Creston was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. for possession of a controlled substance, non-marijuana, 3rd offense, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Authorities say the arrest occurred in the 500 block of West Adams Street.

This year’s RAGBRAI route may not be the Walk of Fame — but it will take on some Hollywood flavor in an Iowa sort of way. Cyclists will roll through Greenfield and Winterset, both having been the settings of major Hollywood movies. And if those cinematic ties weren’t enough, the route also goes through the birth town of one of Tinseltown’s biggest stars of all.

The biggest bicycling event for the state of Iowa is underway. Tomorrow, the bicyclists taking part in the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) will make their way through Adair County, with Greenfield being the midday stop. The route through Greenfield has changed since the city was originally chosen as a stop, allowing bicyclists to tour through areas that were in the path of the May 21st tornado that devastated a mile long stretch of the town in a minute.

"You should always do the slip and slides whenever you see one," said the 35-year-old Iowa City cyclist who is riding in his sixth RAGBRAI this year. Clarke, who stood akimbo feet away from the inflatable palm tree waterslide, was drenched, trying to catch his breath from running at top speed and flinging his body on the slide where he was met by the rush of swashing water.
