NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in New Bedford is undergoing restoration efforts that will bring the space back to life more than 100 years after the theater first opened.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held on Friday with city and state leaders in attendance. The work is expected to take between 14 and 18 months.

The theater is owned by the city of New Bedford. The Purchase Street property hasn’t been renovated since 1983.

When the project is complete, there will be a new historically-appropriate marquee, a movement studio, speakeasy lounge and education spaces.

Officials say the project will also address needed maintenance like new seats, restrooms and accessibility upgrades.
