NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) — People across the nation gathered in New Bern on Thursday to celebrate the Fourth of July in one of North Carolina’s oldest coastal cities.

For decades people have gathered in New Bern to celebrate the Glorious Fourth. After all, New Bern was founded in 1710, making it older than the United States of America. In a place where history is so important, Tryon Palace said that they’re making sure to celebrate it in a big way.

Tryon Palace said that more than 1,200 people passed through its gates on Thursday. From the Drum and Fife Corps rehearsing their marches to the continental line practicing musket fire, and interpreters getting into costume, all of it was to show what life was like in New Bern once freed from English rule.

With America’s 250th birthday just a couple years away, Thursday’s celebration showed how Tryon Palace is getting ready for the big 250.

“We’re heavily into the 250th celebrations already. We’re planning all sorts of fun stuff. This year is a sign of more to come. I think that we’re going to have even bigger events larger celebrations in the next few years.” said Shane Mason, Tryon Palace Interpretation Coordinator.

This year saw one of the best turnouts for the Fife and Drum Corps, with 12 musicians and one flag bearer.

“The reading of the Declaration of Independence. Declaring our freedom from Britain. It’s very moving. To appreciate what a great country we have.” said Dennis Andrews, Fife and Drum Corps.

The first North Carolina regiment of the Continental Line got to fire their new cannon. And as tradition dictates, the Declaration of Independence was read out. But instead of one interpreter reading the declaration there were three this year.

“I know that I tune out after 2 and a half pages of dialogue. I’m like surely if we had more voices, it would make it a little better.” said Leslie Lambrecht, Tryon Palace Historic Costumer.

These interpreters traveled back in time, from 2024 to New Bern’s first Fourth celebration in 1778. All to make the Fourth of July a special experience for those traveling through Tryon’s gates. Those in attendance said that there is something timeless about hearing the declaration read out loud.

“For me personally, I still say the declaration. It’s just a great reminder of how our country was founded,” said Stephen Combs, Going to Glorious Fourth FOR 20 Years. “This is the first time that I can remember they’ve ever had three speakers read the declaration. I liked it. I thought it kind of kept your interest through out.”

Tryon Palace added that they wished everyone a glorious Fourth.
