    Suspect in hit-and-run that killed Connecticut State Police trooper due in court

    UPDATE: News 8 has learned that the suspect will not appear in court on Tuesday, July 2, as previously scheduled.


    NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A man charged in the hit-and-run that killed a Connecticut State Police trooper in May is expected to face a judge Tuesday in New Britain.

    The 44-year-old suspect, Alex Oyola-Sanchez, faces multiple charges in the death of Trooper First Class Aaron Pelletier , including second-degree manslaughter, operating under the influence of alcohol/drugs and failure to move over. He has been held in lieu of a $1.5 million bond.

    Pelletier was conducting a routine traffic stop on Interstate 84 just before Exit 31 in Southington on May 30 when he was hit outside of his cruiser by Oyola-Sanchez, state police said. According to the state police report, Oyola-Sanchez admitted to taking drugs the day of the hit-and-run.

    During a June 6 court proceeding, Oyola-Sanchez appeared virtually from a hospital bed. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Oyola-Sanchez was previously convicted of third-degree murder, attempted homicide and other felonies in his native Puerto Rico.
