NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ -- Summit Baseball was well represented at the Quad County Underclassmen All-Star Game held Friday night at Community Park in North Brunswick.

Hilltopper Second Baseman Ryan Barber, batting lead off, recorded two hits in getting on base four times while teammate Pitcher Gavin Smith got the start for Union County in a lopsided win for Union County over Essex County, 22-9.

Summit’s TJ Flack also led the offensive barrage for Union County, going two for three at the plate and providing defense at shortstop. Summit’s Matthew Kurek, who was also selected for the All-Star team, had a prior baseball commitment.

All four players were key to Summit Baseball’s overall success this year.

“We had a great season,” Head Coach Kevin Zaleski said. “Moving up to the top Watchung Division was a big step for the program and finishing tied for second proves we belong there.  The boys really wanted to focus on where they left off last season, and they did a great job continuing the winning culture.  We finished with an 18-6-1 record (8-4 division).

“All season, we pitched and played defense well and that kept us in all games.  Even in our six losses, we lost by a combined nine runs -- showing we have the ability to play with anyone in the state,” the coach said.
