NEW BRUNSWICK – Here comes Santa Claus – right down George Street?!?!
Yes, Santa and Mrs. Claus will make a special appearance on Saturday as City Center celebrates Christmas in July between Church and Paterson streets.
The street will be transformed into a winter wonderland with Christmas music, decorations, small Christmas trees and a snow-making machine.
Residents – with or without their pets – will be able to get a head start on those Christmas cards by taking selfies with Santa and Mrs. Claus against a holiday backdrop complete with reindeer.
For children of all ages, there will be games, chalk art, Italian ices, ice cream, popcorn and cotton candy.
“We want people to come dressed festively, just to make it more fun,” said Pam Stefanek, director of City Market.
In fact, there will be a contest for the best Christmas outfits, with the winners receiving a gift certificate good for one of the many restaurants in and around City Center.
City Market , the organization that works with the city to support about 550 businesses in a 25-block section of downtown New Brunswick, has created an enhanced schedule of promotions this summer.
Christmas in July overlaps for at least one afternoon with the city’s ongoing Restaurant Week, during which more than 25 restaurants are offering prix fixe menus and various discounts through July 27.
City Market has made use of an open area recently created when the City Council voted last month to close a section of George Street to vehicles through Sept. 1.
So, City Center has been home to promotions such as pop-up music performances. A silent disco is scheduled for July 25. A Latin Night is scheduled for August.
Santa and Mrs. Claus will be appearing on George Street on Saturday 4-6 p.m.
