NEW CASTLE, Pa. (WKBN) – Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro says he has not talked with potential Democrat presidential nominee Kamala Harris about joining the ticket.

Harris’s campaign has requested vetting materials from several potential running mates to join the vice president on the Democratic ticket in November, including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly (D).

While in New Castle Wednesday, Shapiro admitted he did speak with Harris Sunday after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek a second term, but he insists the two only discussed how to defeat Republican Donald Trump in November. He also pushed back against those who claim Harris should not be the party’s nominee.

“For anyone calling for an open process, I will tell you we had one. And you know, she kicked butt and she earned that support. She earned the nomination,” Shapiro said. “I’m proud to support her.”

Shapiro said the choice of a running mate is a very personal one and should be made by the Vice President on her own.
