Swimming: Hunter Franke targets with Hawks Landing, VAST swim teams
Verona senior Hunter Franke, who swims for the Hawks Landing Swim Team in the summer, has big expectations for improving his times to earn an opportunity to swim in college. Franke won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 58.82 seconds, only 0.32 of a second ahead of Ridgewood’s Evan Lederer and a teammate on the Verona boys swimming team. He also won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2 minutes, 10.01 seconds.
Summer baseball: Jefferson splits doubleheader with Belleville
JEFFERSON — Jefferson’s summer baseball team split a doubleheader versus Belleville on Wednesday, losing 6-1 before a 17-0 win at Fischer Field on Wednesday. Home Talent League: Verona sneaks by Hollandale to extend win streak to 67
Verona survived a scare, but clipped Hollandale 3-2 in a walk-off win on Sunday, July 14, at Stampfl Field. With two wins, Verona improved to 11-0 in the Home Talent Sunday League before a showdown of unbeatens against Dodgeville for the Western Section regular season championship and a No. 1 seed in the playoffs. The Cavaliers have won 67 straight games combined in the HTL Sunday and Night leagues.
Prep sports: Oregon begins search for girls soccer coach
Oregon High School is conducting a search for a new girls soccer coach and several assistant coaches for the 2024-25 school year. Led by head coach Bobby Nichols, the Oregon girls soccer team beat Whitefish Bay 1-0 in the WIAA Division 2 state championship in June. Nichols announced he’s moving to Kansas City, Missouri to take a full-time position with the Kansas City Union soccer club as the assistant director of the youth academy.
Sport Oregon Announces Passing of Damian Williams
Sport Oregon has announced that Damian Williams, the organization’s former sports tourism services manager, passed away on June 12 after a battle with cancer. Williams worked with Sport Oregon from July 2021 to June 2022, helping the state return to live events following the pandemic and contributing to the development of the new sports tourism department.

The 2024 Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Small-School All-Star Game at Titan Stadium on the UW-Oshkosh campus on Saturday afternoon will have a distinct Brodhead/Juda flavor. Retiring Brodhead/Juda head coach Jim Matthys will guide the Small School South squad, Jeff Jubie will serve as an assistant and no less than three former Cardinals are on his South roster: 6-foot-1, 190-pound wide receiver Gunner Boegli, 5-7, 165-pound defensive back Marcus McIntyre and Matthys’ son, Blake, a 6-2, 220-pound linebacker. ...

Resume: In two seasons with the UW-Parkside women’s soccer team, 2021 Oregon High School graduate Emily Mikkelson has appeared in 38 games, starting in 35 of those contests. As a sophomore with the Rangers, Mikkelson started in 16 of 19 games and was second on Parkside with 14 points (five goals and four assists).
