One man is dead, and another is critically injured following an attempted break-in and shooting at a New Hanover residence.

Deputies responded to a shooting at 636 Capeside Drive early Saturday morning, according to a news release from the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office. A homeowner acted in self-defense when a man attempted to unlawfully enter his home.

Around 3 a.m., 74-year-old David Rose rang the doorbell and beat the front door of 62-year-old Rodney Jester's home, according to the release. Jester and his wife were asleep. When Jester got up and opened the door, Rose shot him.

Jester's wife attempted to shut the door and Rose tried to forcibly enter, according to the release. Jester grabbed his gun and shot once through the door, striking Rose in the head.

Jester was rushed to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center and is currently in critical condition. Rose died on scene as a result of his injuries.

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office consulted with District Attorney Ben David and no charges have been filed against Jester, according to the release.

"Last night, a homeowner faced a dire situation when a suspect attempted to forcefully enter his home. In defense of his life and property, the homeowner acted within his rights," Sheriff Ed McMahon said in the release. "Our investigation has determined that the homeowner used necessary force to protect himself and his family."

The incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of self-defense laws, McMahon said in the release.

"Under our state's laws, individuals have the right to defend themselves when they believe they are in imminent danger," McMahon said in the release. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all parties affected by this incident. The Sheriff's Office will continue to support the homeowner and uphold the laws that protect the rights of our citizens."

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the incident.
