NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – Almost two centuries of firefighting history was recognized in New Haven Sunday morning when the Firemen’s Benevolent Association of New Haven (FBANH) celebrated their 175th anniversary.

Founded in 1849, the FBANH predates the New Haven Fire Department by 13 years. The non-profit exists to support New Haven firefighters and their families during hardships. To families in need the FBANH offers emergency assistance, injury benefits, funeral planning and more.

“We spend a third of our lives in this service. When you take this job seriously, sometimes you spend even half your life in this service,” said New Haven Fire Chief John Alston. “And your family needs to know that they’re not alone. They need to know that you belong to something greater.”

Mayor Elicker joined members of the FBANH and supporters at Evergreen Cemetery where the FBANH own and maintain the Firemen’s Monument. In honor of the anniversary the monument was rededicated.

On the monument, Mayor Elicker said, “This site is such a special place in the Elm City. It’s a sacred ground for New Haven Firefighters and their families. It’s where New Haven’s bravest are laid in eternal rest.”

All members of the New Haven Fire Department, past and present, are eligible for internment in the Firemen’s Monument. To date, 35 firefighters have been laid to rest there, including two former chiefs and several firefighters killed in the line of duty.

Funding for the FBANH comes from regular Firefighter contributions and generous donations from the public. Anyone who would like to contribute to the FBANH can find out how here .
