Some Apex services taken offline due to 'cybersecurity incident'
A cybersecurity incident is being blamed for knocking out some town systems in Apex.The city specifically cited utility billing and building permits as services that have been taken offline for the time being.On Tuesday morning Apex's IT department spotted problems pointing to what the city is calling a "cybersecurity incident." The town launched an investigation, reaching out to the North Carolina Joint Cybersecurity Task Force and federal law enforcement agencie.Apex wrote on its website that emergency plans in place have allowed the town to continue to regularly operate safety and emergency services without any problems."We are committed to addressing the situation quickly and responsibly, by collaborating with legal counsel, technical experts, and cybersecurity professionals," the town wrote in a statement.Continued updates on the situation will be posted on the town's website.
Another landmark moment for the Northside neighborhood and Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity and the Coastal Credit Union Foundation celebrated the near completion of two duplex homes in the Gattis Court community in Chapel Hill on June 29. When these homes are finished in late summer or early fall, they will mark a significant transformation of the land, which previously housed only one home before Habitat’s intervention. This growth from one to four homes is a testament to the powerful, effective work of Habitat for Humanity and the Coastal Credit Union Foundation.
AIR LOOM exhibit celebrates 15 years of artists-in-residence at Cassilhaus
CHAPEL HILL–Curators of art exhibits often seek out a coherent and compelling theme around which to organize the featured artwork. But Frank Konhaus, co-curator of AIR LOOM (the current show at Cassilhaus) declares that it was “a nightmare to have a show with 53 artists that share nothing in common, but that they were here together.” By “here” Konhaus is referring to the longstanding artist-in-residency program that he and his wife, Ellen Cassilly, established at Cassilhaus–their dream home/art gallery/artist studio and residency in the woods between Durham and Chapel Hill. While pulling together this complicated show was initially daunting, Cassily and Konhaus discovered that the “disparate voices slowly became a chorus” during the commemorative process and a joyful one at that.

UNC-Chapel Hill’s THRIVE program is helping veterans heal
The THRIVE (Transforming Health and Resilience in Veterans) Program — a community-based clinical outreach program run out of UNC-Chapel Hill — is providing veterans with holistic healthcare. The program has a particular focus on helping veterans with post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and musculoskeletal disorders. It was founded by two Carolina academics, Jason Mihalik and Shawn Kane. They first met while studying TBI as active duty service members at the Matthew Gfeller Center in the College of Arts and Sciences. Since THRIVE first opened in 2022, around two new members have joined every week, although they plan on expanding to accommodate more vets in need.

Well water test history must now be shared with home buyers
Residential property disclosure statements in North Carolina now include a question about testing for contaminants in private wells, thanks to work by the NIEHS-funded University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) Superfund Research Program (SRP) Center and collaborators. The decision by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission, effective July 1, requires sellers to indicate whether dwellings supplied by private well water have ever had the water supply tested for quality, quantity, and pressure and, if so, to provide the date of the test.
