Robbinsdale Cooper alumnus and New Hope native Melwin Newbern found a new home to continue his journey through professional basketball last week, signing for Eastern Mavericks DBC of the NBL1 Central in Australia.

It is not Newbern’s first taste of professional hoops, having recently discovered his first professional team in Georgia, BC Astrali. Newbern played for Astrali in the final nine games of the 2022/23 season, collecting 284 minutes where he had 142 points, 37 assists, 15 steals, and a free-throw percentage of 71.4.

The former Hawk played for North Dakota State College of Science and Montana State Billings before ending his college career at Minot State University.

Newbern played 41 games over two years at Minot, featuring as both a guard and a forward. He collected 704 minutes on the court, 611 points, 69 assists, and 44 steals.

Newbern was a three-sport athlete at Cooper, where he earned three all-conference selections for basketball and captained the Hawks for two years.

The Eastern Mavericks were founded in 1995 and are based in the city of Mount Baker in the state of South Australia.
