City Council proposal would guarantee wage for musicians…for city gigs only

Musicians in New Orleans may soon celebrate a huge win. The New Orleans City Council will consider an ordinance that will set a minimum wage based on input from The Music and Culture Coalition of New Orleans.

However, the proposed legislation isn't a sweeping one and only includes bookings for city sponsored events. Councilman JP Morrell explained to WWL’s Tommy Tucker.

“Whether it’s providing music for a gala or event, or entertaining out of town guests, there will be a minimum threshold of two-hundred dollars for an hour of work.”

Musicians are routinely hired by the city at Louis Armstrong Airport, any number of functions at Gallier Hall, and when welcoming honored guests.

However, the hope is that this is the first step in changes for local artists.

“As with other legislation, the goal is to start in the public sector and it makes its way into the private sector.”

The council was able to partner with The Music and Culture Coalition of New Orleans to be on par with the best rates.
