Saints coach must accomplish a major task to keep his job after 2024 season

The New Orleans Saints need to get back to the postseason. Plain and simple - the past two seasons have been a major disappointment given where the black and gold thought they would be. Dennis Allen is the head coach. At the end of the day, plenty of that blame falls on him.

Slow starts to games, questionable in-game decisions, and fallouts with star players have all circulated Allen during his time as the Saints head man. Now, he is officially on a scalding hot seat heading into the 2024 NFL season.

Mike Antoniou of A to Z Sports listed nine coaches on the potential "hot seat" when it comes to their job stability for the upcoming season. Allen, unsurprisingly, made the cut.

Dennis Allen named hot seat candidate for 2024

We are long passed the days of the powerhouse Saints offense led by Sean Payton and Drew Brees. Payton abandoned the team when he saw what life would be like without future Hall of Famer Drew Brees and left Dennis Allen trying to pick up the pieces.

Allen has gone through three difference starting quarterbacks since taking over in 2021 and none have looked any better than the last. Allen hasn’t been able to take advantage of a wide-open NFC South and has essentially led the team to purgatory where they aren’t good enough to make the playoffs, and not bad enough to get the star player they need in the draft. One more season hovering around .500 will be enough to give the Saints the excuse to hit the reset button. -- Mike Antoniou, A to Z Sports

Antoniou îs spot on with his assessment. Allen has not proven much at all during his tenure as an NFL head coach, both with the Saints and the Raiders. His record is a measly 24-46 in five years. That's quite the sample size for the veteran coach, and it does not induce much confidence from fans.

That being said, GM Mickey Loomis and the Saints front office doubled down on their belief in Allen during this offseason. They kept him after yet another playoff-less season in 2023 where the defense had more woes than the year before.

Some star players backed Allen recently, too. Demario Davis and Tyrann Mathieu both sent strong support to their HC.

Heading into 2024, there must be a goal attained by Allen and his team, though.

Saints need to win at least a playoff game for Allen to keep his job

If that can't happen in a third year with plenty of proven talent on both sides of the ball in a weak NFC division, it simply may not meant to be for Allen in New Orleans.
