Spencer Rattler may have struggled at early practices for the New Orleans Saints, but the rookie quarterback knows there's still a long way to go and plenty of chances to prove himself.
The former South Carolina signal-caller is expected to compete for the backup job behind starter Derek Carr in New Orleans, but fell behind 2023 draft pick Jake Haener after OTAs. Rattler, a fifth-round pick this year, had difficulties with timing and threw several interceptions.
While Rattler conceded that the speed of the NFL is much greater than what he experienced in college, the quarterback had a three-word qualifier -- "football is football."
"Obviously we haven't been in full pads, full speed yet, but just getting timing down with the plays, listening to your feet, I think that's the biggest thing," Rattler said, via ESPN . "But I'm getting used to it."
Rattler has already shown signs of improvement, looking better at minicamp than he did through OTAs. The 23-year-old said he could notice a difference after getting some NFL experience under his belt.
"I feel very comfortable, just getting out there. We're so big on footwork and timing. It's never perfect," Rattler said.

Rattler has maintained the same attitude since college. After transferring from Oklahoma to South Carolina, the quarterback used the same three-word response when asked about the physical nature of the SEC.
“I mean, football is football, but at the end of the day, with this conference, you can definitely tell the physicality is different,” Rattler said, via the Austin American-Statesman . “You’re playing the best players every single week. It’s the closest thing to the NFL (in college football), and this is why I wanted to come here to compete, be with the best and improve myself as a player.”
