The sun might be setting on the career of one of the NFL’s better tackles.

On Thursday, the New Orleans Saints announced that right tackle Ryan Ramczyk was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, meaning that he is out for the season.

“A vested veteran placed on Reserve/PUP prior to the final roster reduction is out for the season,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote on X . “Players placed on Reserve/PUP at the final roster reduction will miss at least 4 games.”

Rapoport noted that it could mean Ramczyk’s career is over.

The 30-year-old had knee surgery this offseason and did not work out during either OTAs or mandatory minicamp.

Ramczyk missed the Saints’ final four games in 2023 after exacerbating the cartilage in his knee, officially being placed on injured reserve on Dec. 30.

Though the Saints seemed to think that Ramczyk would make a full recovery from what seemed like a minor procedure, that optimism waned dramatically.

“He just isn’t quite where I was probably hoping he’d be, and really quite frankly, where he was hoping he’d be,” head coach Dennis Allen said in March.

With rumors swirling that Ramczyk might never play again, the Saints drafted Oregon State tackle/guard Taliese Fuaga with the 14th overall pick to give themselves a contingency plan.

Now, it appears that possibility has become reality.

Ramczyk entered the NFL in 2017 and immediately became an anchor along New Orleans’ right side.

The former Wisconsin Badger never gave up more than four sacks or 25 pressures in a season, finishing with an overall Pro Football Focus offensive grade of 73.5 or higher in all of his seven seasons.

Without Ramczyk, the Saints slotted in Landon Young at right tackle, though he finished with a dismal 49.4 overall grade.

In Allen’s second year at the helm, New Orleans finished 9-8 but missed the postseason.

Now down one of the team’s best offensive players, the Saints — hoping for resurgences from Derek Carr and Alvin Kamara — look to make the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

The team will fully report to camp in Irvine, Calif. on July 23.
