NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — The Audubon Aquarium has announced the death of Frosty the Barred Owl.

Audubon officials said she was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and was humanely euthanized after “her care team determined that her condition had declined significantly.”

Original member of Dirty Dozen Brass Band Lionel Paul Batiste Jr. dies

They said Frosty was a long-term resident of the aquarium and was estimated to be 28 years old.

In 1997, Audubon leaders said Frosty was brought to the aquarium after being hit by a car and receiving treatment from the LSU Veterinary School.

She was featured in the former Mississippi River Gallery and watched aquarium guests from the Down the Bayou Exhibit after renovations .

“Her large owl eyes watched everything happening in the Down the Bayou exhibit and she occasionally delighted guests with her subtle and beautiful calls,” Audubon officials said.

Audubon leaders said barred owls are the most commonly found owls in the state and live in marsh areas and forests.
