Spencer Rattler is holding his own at New Orleans Saints training camp, turning in some strong performances as he battles with 2023 draft pick Jake Haener for the backup job.
The former South Carolina quarterback has overcome some early struggles in spring practices and hit his stride in training camp. Reporter Nick Underhill noted that he was particularly impressive at practice on August 2.
"Spencer Rattler had play of the day on TD to Holker," Underhill wrote on X .
Rattler could have an even bigger opportunity ahead as the competition for the backup spot narrows. The team announced on Friday that it terminated the contract of veteran quarterback Nathan Peterman, clearing the way for Rattler to get more snaps in practice.
Rattler is coming off a season at South Carolina where he completed 68.9% of his passes for 3,186 yards with 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Though he was once seen as a top prospect coming out of high school, Rattler fell to the fifth round of the NFL Draft.

Rattler has already earned praise from wide receiver Chris Olave, who noted his strong arm and big potential.
"Rattler's arm talent is off the charts," Olave said .
"This was one of the biggest praises of Rattler coming out of college, having been rated highly by scouts even as a high school recruit," Olave added. "It’s also a reason Saints fans are excited about his potential."
