NEW SHARON, Iowa — Heavy rains Tuesday afternoon caused water to flow over roads in the Mahaska County town of New Sharon. Around 5:30 p.m. the water flowed over Highway 63. Fire and Police units were on the scene and allowed vehicles to cross the flooded highway, one at a time.

The water cascaded into a waterfall on the west side of the highway, right by the North Mahaska Schools.

“Usually it happens when you get a torrential downpour,” said Kelly Mick, a firefighter on the New Sharon Fire Department. “I’ve never seen this much rain this fast. It is flooded here before, but not as bad.”

There were a few reports in town of water in basements. Water was over gravel roads southwest of town. Water was flowing into a cornfield at least two feet deep.

“Hopefully it’s over,” said firefighter Mick.
