Kim Kardashian has been praised many times for using her huge platform to shed light on some important things that are happening outside of the fashion and entertainment world. However, her recent attempt to bring attention to the case of Ivan A. Cantu garnered a little backlash.

ICYMI: the reality star mistakenly identified a New York City project manager as a death row inmate in Texas, sparking confusion and outrage online. The mix-up occurred when Kardashian shared a photo of Ivan A. Cantu, a project manager residing in NYC, instead of the intended inmate Ivan Cantu on her Instagram Story.

The innocent project manager, who found himself at the center of this social media storm, took to Facebook to clarify the situation, stating, “I am not getting executed, some idiot who runs @kimkardashian [socials] used my picture instead of Ivan ‘Abner’ Cantu.” Despite understanding that it was a mistake, he expressed a desire for an apology from Kardashian. The 43 year old, known for her advocacy in criminal justice reform, swiftly deleted the erroneous post and issued an apology, acknowledging the error and expressing regret for the confusion caused.

“A wrong image of Mr. Cantu was posted earlier today and I would like to apologize to the person who’s image was used in error,” she wrote in an Instagram Story.

Meanwhile, the real Ivan Cantu, facing imminent execution in Texas, has been the focus of Kardashian’s efforts to petition for a review of his case and prevent his scheduled execution.

Cantu was found guilty by a jury of murdering his cousin, James Mosqueda, and Mosqueda’s fiancée, Amy Kitchen, back in 2000. Cantù claimed they were killed by rival drug dealers who allegedly threatened him the night prior to the murders. The case of Ivan Cantu, convicted of a double murder but maintaining his innocence, has garnered attention from Kardashian and her followers, with the hope of influencing Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s decision on his fate.

As the drama unfolds, Kardashian’s involvement in criminal justice reform continues to be a focal point, showcasing her dedication to advocating for those she believes have been wronged by the justice system.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott will ultimately determine if he will lesser his sentence or grant him a reprieve. If not, he’ll go through with the original 2000 sentence.
