Rangers captain to be featured in NHL docuseries on Prime Video

Though there’s been speculation about him being traded or bought out by the New York Rangers this summer, we do know at least one place where Jacob Trouba can be found this upcoming fall. That would be on Prime Video.

The Rangers captain is one of several NHL stars that will be featured in a new behind-the-scenes docuseries that’s yet to be titled. The League and Prime Video are partnering with Box to Box Films on the project.

“This is so meaningful for our league. Box To Box has revolutionized modern storytelling for Formula 1, golf and tennis,” said NHL chief content officer & senior executive vice president Steve Mayer in a statement released Thursday. “With the full support of the League, players, coaches and owners, we welcome the opportunity to showcase our stars and the greatest season and postseason in sports – the Stanley Cup Playoffs – to a global audience.”

The series promises exclusive content, following specific players on and off the ice over the course of the season as they pursue the Stanley Cup. Three of the players in the series are Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid and teammate Leon Draisaitl, and Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk. Each will be followed closely by cameras when their teams play in the Stanley Cup Final , which begins Saturday with Game 1 in Sunrise, Florida.

A pair of clips of Trouba appear in the trailer for the series. One is off-ice, playing with his son at home. The other is Trouba flying through the air in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, missing a massive attempted check against Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas.

Among others, Trouba, McDavid, Draisaitl and Tkachuk are featured in the series along with David Pastrnak and Jeremy Swyaman of the Boston Bruins, Jack Eichel of the Vegas Golden Knights and Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes.

“We want to stay true to the world of ice hockey with the series. The sport is as beautiful, skillful and graceful, as it is brutal, pressurized and powerful; and we aim to balance the energetic and fast-paced action leading up to the Stanley Cup Final, with the quiet and raw drama taking place off the ice,” Paul Martin, Box To Box Films co-founder and executive producer, said.

This series will be the fourth original hockey program Amazon has produced with NHL Productions for Prime Video. In 2021, All or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs multi-episode docuseries chronicled the 2020-21 season for the Original Six franchise. This season, original hockey documentaries Chosen One: Alexandre Daigle and Saving Sakic premiered on Prime Video.

Saving Sakic , of course, featured the Rangers when they signed free-agent Joe Sakic to a massive offer sheet in 1997 and how the Colorado Avalanche incredibly found a way to match it and keep the future Hall of Famer.

Trouba sustained a broken ankle in March and missed four weeks. He returned to play all 16 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, when he had one goal and seven points, and led the Rangers with 72 blocked shots and finished second with 60 hits.

The 30-year-old has two seasons remaining at $8 million per year on his contract, and could begin next season on the third defense pairing, leading to speculation that the Rangers could move on from him this offseason.
