NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A California escaped convict for over 10 years was arrested in New York City last month, officials announced.

Eduardo Hernandez, 42, “walked away” from the Delta Conservation Camp in Suisun City on Nov. 15, 2011, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation .

“The primary mission of the camp is to provide incarcerated fire crews for fire suppression in the Sonoma, Lake, Napa Unit and Solano County areas,” the CDCR states on its website.

Hernandez was originally sentenced on July 6, 2005, in Los Angeles County and transferred to the CDCR on August 4, 2005. He was serving a thirteen-year sentence for carjacking with a firearm enhancement. After serving over six years, he escaped with another inmate.

Hernandez was found nearly 13 years later and taken into custody in New York City on May 20, 2024.

Hernandez’s case will be referred to the Solano County District Attorney for possible escape charges.

The second inmate, Jose Padilla, who escaped with Hernandez remains on the run, according to the Los Angeles Times .

Further details about his detainment were not immediately clear.
