QUEENS, N.Y. ( WPIX ) – A Delta flight from Detroit to Amsterdam was diverted to John F. Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday morning after passengers were served spoiled food, officials told Nexstar’s WPIX.

The plane, with 277 passengers on board, landed at JFK around 4 a.m.

It’s not known how many people were served the spoiled food. The crew, however, reported that several passengers were sick on board the flight, according to the FAA.

Delta is launching an internal investigation into the spoiled food. The New York City Fire Department treated 12 people who were on the flight, according to fire officials.

“This is not the service Delta is known for and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay in their travels,” a Delta spokesperson said.

According to Delta’s website , the airline’s Main Cabin customers receive a free meal on “long-haul” international flights.
