NYC under heat emergency through Wednesday with ‘warm soupy humid air mass'

People prepare to cross the street near Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn during hot weather on June 24, 2024.

    Muggy’s the word.

Much of the New York City region will be under a heat advisory from noon on Monday through 8 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Parts of the city, Northeast New Jersey and Southeast Connecticut could be hit with real-feel temperatures of around 100 degrees when accounting for humidity.

Jay Engle, a meteorologist for NWS, said the only currently forecast reprieve from the extreme heat is potential rain on Wednesday and Thursday — but that could keep conditions humid.

“We're gonna stay mired in this warm soupy humid air mass for quite some time,” he said.

Engle added that local heat indices are expected to reach the upper 90s this week and light winds will provide little relief. It’s unusual for the area to have such high humidity levels this early in the summer, he said.

New York City will be under a heat emergency through Wednesday , according to Aries Dela Cruz, a spokesperson for the city’s Emergency Management agency. That means official cooling centers will be open across the five boroughs, and New Yorkers can find them by calling 311 or exploring the city’s map of sites , including libraries and community centers.

Officials say extreme heat is typically responsible for 350 preventable deaths a year in the city. Residents are advised to stay cool and hydrated and monitor themselves and others for symptoms, including dizziness, breathing troubles and nausea.

An air quality advisory is also in effect for the area on Monday due to ozone levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, such as older adults and people with respiratory issues.

NWS predicts that the remnants of Hurricane Beryl will reach the western parts of the New York area by Thursday, bringing tropical moisture and possible thunderstorms.
