Ryne Stanek off to rough start with Mets after arriving at trade deadline

In hopes of strengthening their bullpen, the Mets acquired Ryne Stanek from the Mariners before the July 30 deadline.

So far, the results haven’t been encouraging.

Stanek allowed four runs and got just one out in Sunday’s loss in Seattle , against his former team.

It was his second bad performance in his five outings as a Met.

Following the game, Carlos Mendoza credited the Mariners with “really good at-bats” against Stanek and noted that his old teammates “were familiar with him,” adding that Stanek pitched well in his previous outing in Colorado.

Still, the results have not been good for Stanek for a while.

Even before the trade from Seattle, Stanek was struggling.

He allowed runs in his final three appearances with the Mariners.

The 33-year-old was expected to help secure a new-look bullpen, along with the additions of Phil Maton and Huascar Brazoban.

Maton has been excellent and Brazoban has been good in his last two appearances.

The return of Reed Garrett should also help.

Overall, since the moves — which were made after injuries to Brooks Raley and Drew Smith, in addition to the short-term losses of Dedniel Nunez and Sean Reid-Foley — the bullpen has performed relatively well.

But with a push to the playoffs on the horizon, the Mets will look for more from the postseason-tested Stanek, who has pitched in October in each of the past four seasons.

Starling Marte continues to rehab from the right knee bone bruise that has sidelined him since June and could potentially play back-to-back games in the outfield for the first time Tuesday and Wednesday for Double-A Binghamton.

He last played for the Mets on June 22.

The Mets are still waiting for the 2022 version of Marte to reappear, when he had an OPS of .814.

Perhaps more than anyone else, Pete Alonso should be happy to get out of Seattle.

The first baseman went 0-for-11 with six strikeouts and a walk in the three games against the Mariners.

Coupled with Brandon Nimmo’s extended slump , it’s no wonder why the Mets were overmatched by the Mariners.

Francisco Alvarez has just one homer since June 26, and only five in 60 games all season.

The 22-year-old Alvarez had 25 home runs in 123 games last year.
