Here are three non-Daniel Jones takeaways from the Giants’ 28-10 preseason loss to the Texans :

    1. Bend, don’t break

It was a big test for the Giants young secondary to face arguably the NFL’s best receiver trio for two series.

The defense forced three straight red-zone incompletions to get a turnover on downs (and later added a forced punt).

Malik Nabers shows signs of what he can bring to Giants

Deonte Banks held up in one-on-one coverage on an end-zone fade against Nico Collins.

But Dane Belton was called for a pass interference penalty that offset an offensive holding. Stefon Diggs, Collins and Tank Dell totaled two catches for 33 yards.

Giants saw Daniel Jones decisions they ‘can’t afford’ in preseason debut

    2. Grounded game

The Giants are betting on the combination of their improved offensive line and starting running back Devin Singletary to build a rushing attack that used to rely on Saquon Barkley making something out of nothing.

But Singletary, behind four of the five projected starters up front, carried 10 times for 20 yards in the first half and needed two tries to score a touchdown from the 1-yard line.

    3. Hot potato:

Don’t tell Brian Daboll that it’s only preseason and the results don’t matter.

He was harping on the five turnovers, including three lost fumbles (by John Jiles, Lorenzo Lingard and Tommy DeVito) in the second half.

Only DeVito has a chance to make the 53-man roster.

“You don’t give yourself much of a chance when you turn the ball over,” Daboll said.
