Bill Belichick angers some with ‘Taxachussets’ statement

Bill Belichick didn’t sugarcoat anything when he discussed the Massachusetts’ state income tax and the challenge it imposes on the Patriots signing free agents.
The 72-year-old Belichick — who parted ways with the Patriots after 24 seasons and six Super Bowl titles in January — recalled negotiations being difficult in Foxboro due to state’s four percent surtax on taxable income more than $1 million, which was implemented in 2022.
“That’s Taxachusetts,” Belichick said during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday, which drew laughs from Pat McAfee and his co-host AJ Hawk. “Virtually every player, even the practice squad … even the minimum players are pretty close to $1 million. So once you hit the $1 million threshold, you pay more state tax in Massachusetts.
“Just another thing you’ve got to contend with in negotiations up there. It’s not like Tennessee or Florida or Nevada — or some of these teams have no state income tax.
“You get hit pretty hard on that with the agents. They’ll come and sledgehammer you down about the tax they’re paying. We don’t get any benefit from that.”
Some weren’t thrilled with Belichick’s comments, and let him have it on X.
“That’s bulls–t,” one person wrote . “That millionaire’s tax wasn’t enacted when Bill coached most of his career here! He’s just as cheap as Robert [Kraft]!
“He had a problem with players making big $ no matter who they were! He nickel & dimed [former quarterback, Tom] Brady his entire career in Foxboro!”
Another person added a bunch of emoji faces vomiting.
In 2022, Massachusetts voters approved that personal income taxpayers “must pay an additional 4 percent surtax on taxable income over $1,000,000,” according to Mass.gov.
The surtax threshold will be $1,053,750 for the tax year 2024.
Belichick, who’s currently entertaining media opportunities for the 2024 season, doesn’t have to deal with recruiting free agents to Foxborough amid the Patriots’ rebuild.
The Patriots went 1-2 in the preseason under new head coach Jerod Mayo — and they open the 2024 regular season against the Bengals in Cincinnati on Sept. 8.
The Patriots and Belichick mutually parted ways after New England finished with a 4-13 record last season.
Belichick, who said he wants to coach still, resides in Massachusetts and owns multiple properties.
He closed on a four-bedroom, four-bathroom home — worth $4.8 million — near downtown Nantucket in May, according to Nantucket Current .
Belichick made headlines when his relationship with 23-year-old Jordon Hudson — a former college cheerleader at Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts — was revealed in June.
Hudson also joined Belichick at Tom Brady’s Patriots Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Foxborough on June 12.
