    Naomi Osaka dominates 10th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko in US Open return

    Naomi Osaka is on to the second round in her first US Open appearance in two years.

    The former world No. 1 defeated 10th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday inside Louis Armstrong Stadium.

    After committing zero unforced errors in the first set, Osaka finished with nine aces and converted all three of her break points.

    Osaka shed some tears in her post-match interview with ESPN on the court.

    “I was trying not to cry when I walked out,” Osaka said. “Last year I watched Coco (Gauff) play and I so badly wanted to step on these courts again. I didn’t know if I could. I didn’t know if athletically, physically if I was able to. Just to win this match and to be in this atmosphere means so much to me. So thank you.”

    Osaka will now face Karolina Muchova in the second round.
