Zach Wilson gets vote of confidence from Broncos GM after losing QB competition: ‘He’ll be a starter’ in NFL

The Broncos like what they’ve seen from Zach Wilson this preseason.
Speaking recently to The Denver Gazette, Broncos GM George Paton lauded the former first-round pick , who, despite losing the starting quarterback battle to rookie Bo Nix, “has all the starting traits in the world.”
“He has starter tools all over,” Paton said of Wilson. “It’s been pretty cool just watching him. Really, no expectations. He can just go out there and play football. He has all the starting traits in the world. He’s still working through some things. You could see the really good last week in the game (against the Cardinals). He can throw it as good as anyone in the league. … I do think he’ll be a starter in this league.”
Wilson, 25, began his career as the starting quarterback of the Jets in 2021 but was benched multiple times throughout a rocky three-year tenure in New York.
He was traded to the Broncos in April, joining veteran Jarrett Stidham.
Later that month, the team selected Nix with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
“Yeah, I was excited for him. I mean, I don’t think it was a surprise too much, obviously, right? I think he’s had a great camp. I told him I’m excited for him for this opportunity. I really believe that they’re putting him in a good situation. I think [head coach] Sean [Payton] has done a phenomenal job,” Wilson said postgame Sunday.
“Bo has just continued to get better. So, I’m excited to see what he can do and I think he’s ready for it.”
With Denver now providing a fresh start for Wilson — who showed flashes last season after taking over for an injured Aaron Rodgers — perhaps his preseason audition will fuel intrigue for another starting opportunity elsewhere.
The Broncos visit the Seahawks in their season opener on Sept. 8.
