Paul Blackburn’s injury return comes with Mets rotation decisions

Paul Blackburn is set for his return to the Mets rotation Monday, but still to be resolved is where his replacement will land.

On Friday, manager Carlos Mendoza abstained from naming a Tuesday starter in Toronto to follow Blackburn in the rotation.

It would seem to suggest Tylor Megill, who started twice with Blackburn on the injured list, was a candidate to remain as part of a six-man rotation.

The other possibilities are Megill will be deployed to the bullpen or optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.

David Stearns’ calling card saved the Mets’ season

The right-hander allowed three earned runs over four innings in his start against the Red Sox on Wednesday.

If Megill were to remain in the rotation, it would allow Mendoza to open next weekend’s series in Philadelphia with Sean Manaea on the mound.

Otherwise, Manaea, who allowed four runs in 6 ²/₃ innings in the Mets’ 6-4, 10-inning win over the Reds , would pitch Wednesday’s series finale in Toronto, behind David Peterson.

Megill’s value in the bullpen would be as a long reliever, but it would come at the expense of a pitcher already on the roster with space needed for Blackburn, who was sidelined after getting hit on the right hand with a line drive.

Dedniel Nunez will continue resting through the weekend, according to Mendoza, before he’s evaluated to potentially begin throwing.

The rookie right-hander was placed on the IL during the last road trip with right forearm tightness.

Francisco Lindor’s 33-game streak reaching base entering play was one behind Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso for third place on the franchise’s all-time list.

John Olerud set a Mets record by reaching base in 47 straight games beginning in 1998 and continuing into ’99.

Though Sean Reid-Foley was moved to the 60-day injured list Thursday — creating space on the 40-man roster for outfielder Jose Azocar — Mendoza said the right-hander’s season isn’t necessarily finished.

Reid-Foley has been playing catch, according to Mendoza.
