Newark police have arrested a male suspect who allegedly stabbed another male Friday outside of the Salvation Army on the east side of Newark.

Aubrey S. Kerr, 31, of Newark, was arrested Aug. 9 after allegedly stabbing a 35-year-old male outside Salvation Army, 19 North Arch St. The male suffered a “large” laceration on his left arm that required at least 17 stitches but was otherwise unharmed, police say.

Prosecutors charged Kerr with one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony. He remained in Licking County jail on a $250,000 bond as of Tuesday morning.

Newark police responded about 7 p.m. Friday to a report of a stabbing outside the Salvation Army. In a criminal complaint, detectives allege the male attempted to punch Kerr, who approached him with a knife before stabbing him. A NPD spokesperson alleged Kerr attacked the male with a pocket knife.

Kerr reportedly told detectives that he wanted to leave the area after being approached by a separate male he alleges previously stole from him, the complaint states. Kerr also alleged that the 35-year-old male previously stole his belongings and interjected when he tried to leave the scene Friday.

Court records show Kerr was convicted of felonious assault in a separate case in 2019.
