A July 19 ribbon-cutting ceremony in Landing celebrated the COMET program a joint initiative of the New Jersey Innovation Institute’s (NJII) Defense Division , New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) resources, and the United States Department of Defense .

The only-of-its-kind summer internship program offers college students a hands-on, 10-week opportunity to develop solutions to real challenges. NJII’s Advanced Manufacturing Center, Landing 360, houses COMET. It is designed to foster collaboration between industry, academia and government to drive innovation in critical technology areas.

COMET culminates in finished products and presentations to stakeholders and leadership, achieved through the rapid prototyping delivery of manufactured solutions.

“The COMET Initiative represents a major step forward in our mission to drive technological advancement and economic growth,” said Michael
    Johnson
, president of NJII. “We are excited to drive positive impact on the industry and the community through this initiative.”

“The collaboration between NJII and Picatinny Arsenal through the COMET Initiative is a testament to our shared commitment to advancing technological capabilities for our armed forces,” said Paul Manz, chief technology officer JPEO armaments and ammunition, who offered comments on behalf of Maj. “The DEVCOM Armaments Center is proud to be a key collaborator in the COMET Initiative, which will undoubtedly lead to groundbreaking advancements in armament technologies,” said Chris Grassano, director of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Armaments Center.
