A Newark teenager drowned in the Erie Canal Monday evening, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

Police said they responded to the area of Main Street and Van Buren Street around 8 p.m. Monday for a call that a 17-year-old boy had jumped into the Erie Canal and had not resurfaced. A bystander went in after him, attempting to help, but could not locate the boy, police said.

Newark firefighters were able to recover his body Monday evening. Police did not identify the teenager.

An investigation into the drowning is ongoing, but police noted they do not have any reason at this time to consider this a suspicious death.
