A 26-year-old woman was seriously injured early Sunday morning when her vehicle struck a pole in Newark.

The crash happened at approximately 12:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Ogletown Road, approaching Marrows Road. The vehicle left the roadway and hit a utility pole and fence near the Fresh Delaware medical marijuana dispensary.

The driver was "severely trapped within the vehicle requiring a lengthy and methodical extrication," according to Jamielee J. Majewski, a spokesperson for New Castle County Paramedics.

Firefighters from Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company stabilized the vehicle and freed the woman in approximately 20 minutes. She was taken to Christiana Hospital in serious condition to be treated for potential internal injuries.

Delmarva Power crews were on scene until Sunday afternoon to repair the utility pole and downed wires.

The Newark Police Department is investigating the crash.
