Glasgow opened against Sussex Tech for the second straight season and while the Dragons scored 28 more points than they did a year ago, it wasn’t enough as the Ravens cruised to a 56-34 win.

“In defeat, there was still some positives to take away,” second-year head coach Ricky Brown said. “The guys competed and played hard. We had some big plays and put together some drives.”

Naz Gardner was involved in four of those big plays, passing for 138 yards and three touchdowns while scoring himself on a quarterback run. Zyaire Tate caught one of the touchdown passes and also covered 108 yards on four kickoff returns. Jamar Smith racked up 180 all-purpose yards and led the defense with 10 tackles.

“Fatigue set in at times with the amount of two-way guys that we have,” Brown explained. “So mentally, there were some early season mistakes, penalties, etc., that I already expected. Clean up a few things, continue to build chemistry and we’ll improve week to week.”

Glasgow hosts Red Lion Christian Academy on Saturday at 11 a.m.

    Hodgson defeats Howard

Hodgson was the first team to pick up a win on Week Zero when the Silver Eagles defeated Howard, 21-6, in the opening game of the second annual Maxwell Club Kick Off Classic at Abessinio Stadium.

“It’s always great to start the season off 1-0, especially with a win against our district rival Howard,” second-year head coach Dave Collins said.

Xavier Brown passed for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Brysheem Davis was on the receiving end of five of Brown’s passes totaling 57 yards and a score. Jace Hawkins was back on the field after tearing his ACL in last season’s second game, and the running back picked up where he left off, rushing for 99 yards. Hawkins’ longest run when he reached the endzone was called back because of a penalty. In some ways, that play summarized Hodgson’s day on the offensive side of the ball.

“We had some first game mistakes that didn’t allow our offense to get into a good rhythm, but our defense kept us in the game,” Collins explained.

Davis and Hawkins stood out on defense as well. Davis had three tackles and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a score. Hawkins chipped in with four tackles while John DeFelice (nine tackles), Charles Drummond (eight) and Gary Blalock (seven contributed to a solid defensive effort.

“Our kids played hard and fought until the end to pick up the win,” Collins said.

Hodgson’s second game was at Caravel Academy on Sept. 5. Results can be found at www.silvereaglessports.com.

    Red Lion almost pulls upset

The Lions played up a class and held their own before falling to Cape Henlopen, 20-13.

Highly touted junior quarterback Evan Budinger completed 10 of 18 passes for 161 yards and scored on a 1-yard run. Judah Barber rushed for 54 yards, and Mekhi Corbin ran for 42. Barber also had 11 tackles and two sacks, while Chris Trumbull had 10 and two.

“I was very proud of how we played against Cape,” head coach Ken Anderson said. “They came out and punched us in the mouth. People, I think, thought we were going to fold, but we adjusted to their size and skill and battled all night. Games like this will help us come November and December.”

    Upcoming local football games

Saint Mark’s plays at St. Georges on Friday at 4 p.m. Newark High hosts Christiana on Saturday at 11 a.m. Newark Charter JV hosts Indian River on Monday at 6 p.m.

    In my opinion only …

The UD football team did what it had to do in its opener – easily defeat a first- and last-time CAA opponent in Bryant University, 48-17. More than 17,000 fans packed The Tub and as is usually the case for the home opener, the student section was filled. The Hens have an off week and then host the University of Pennsylvania, which will be the first game of the season for the Quakers. That should also be a relatively easy win, at least on paper. Then again, only paper football is actually played with paper.
